“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).” – Matthew 6:24 (AMP)
In the world now, there is a term called, ‘Universalism’. In the Christian world, it means that you can be a Christian and still embrace some worldly principles and lifestyles inasmuch as it doesn’t overly affect your being a Christian in the general sense. If you live among people like this who say and do a lot of things, apart from separating themselves to be a standout Christian, you will be considered as being too overly serious with the faith.
Christ knew the danger of the perilous time that would come even to believers when He said no one can serve two masters. What does service mean in this context? It means devoting your time, attention, resources and heart to serving just one Master. Whatever makes you have a divided attention is already taking away from you the singleness of focus you should have. And there is no reward in having divided attention.
There is a saying in Yoruba that is translated thus: “Whoever chases two rats at the same time will lose them both.” As a Christian, it is true that you will need to have things and resources for a comfortable life but those things shouldn’t make you their slave but you must only trust in God as He provides you with riches and whatever you need according to His will.
In other words, there are a lot of believers who have made their jobs, spouses, children and wealth their master. Their lives are now controlled by these entities, whereas God does not want this. It is unprofitable to serve two masters. You need to make a decision to not allow any other entity make you serve them apart from God. Have a singleness of purpose and focus. Serve God only, for this is the only eternally profitable venture. Blessings.
Practical Application: Make a list of those things that also contest for you loyalty more than Christ. Begin to pray and work on putting them where they truly belong.
Confession: I am no longer a slave to worldliness but I serve God with undivided attention and I walk according to His will for me. I renounce the world completely and I live subjected to Christ alone. My life is lived to please God alone.
