John 17:17 (NKJV)
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
In John 17, Jesus prayed for His disciples, asking the Father to sanctify them by the truth. To be sanctified means to be set apart, made clean, and shaped by God for His purpose. The question now is, how does God do this? He does so through His truth which is the Word.
We live in a world where people often say, “This is my truth,” or “Truth is whatever feels right.” That’s not true; truth is not based on feelings or opinions. God’s Word is not just true, it is THE TRUTH. It never changes, even when everything around us does.
Jesus did not ask God to take His disciples out of the world to safety, rather He asked Him to keep them strong and steady while living in the world (John 17:15). That’s what it means to be anchored in truth. We are not called to run away from the world, but to live differently in it, holding fast to God’s Word while others may follow whatever seems popular.
The Bible helps us see clearly in a world full of lies. It tells us what is right and wrong. It protects us from being tricked by false teachings or confused by every new idea people promote. When we know the Word, we grow in wisdom. We learn to recognize what is from God and what isn’t.
But God’s Word doesn’t just protect us, it also changes us. It works on the inside. It changes how we think, what we want, and how we live. The more we read it, believe it, and obey it, the more we become like the One who prayed this prayer for us – Jesus Himself, the Word made flesh.
If we want to live for God in a world that often pushes Him aside, we must be rooted in His truth. Truth steadies us. Truth shapes us. Truth keeps us strong.
Confession: God’s Word is my truth. I do not follow the world’s opinions. I am set apart and changed by the truth of Scripture. I am rooted, steady, and strong in the Word.
