Do Not Be a Nabal: Ingrate

1 Samuel 25:10 (AMP)

”But Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today, each of whom is breaking away from his master.”

Nabal was a rich man and a sheep shearer in his business, but the Bible recorded his poor character in 1 Sam 25:2-3. ‎He was tagged worthless and foolish by Abigail, who was his wife. This can be traced to his background and name, Nabal, which means “fool” (1 Sam 25:25). What a way to describe a man who was supposed to be the husband of a wise woman like Abigail.

David was kind to Nabal by watching over his possessions without asking for payment or a stated price. Even the servants of Nabal testified about this in 1 Samuel 25:15-16. David made a polite request for help from Nabal, but he was rejected rudely, his kind deeds despised.  Although Nabal was in a feasting season, he could have helped David easily, but he chose to be selfish (1 Sam 25:36). One who is selfish doesn’t care about whatever good has been done to him. If not helped by the Lord, a selfish man will always only care about himself.

Nabal insulted David by calling him an unknown man and a rebellious servant. David got angry, and he sought to destroy Nabal and his household, but he was restrained by Abigail, who mediated between David and Nabal. Abigail dealt wisely with the issue by supplying what David asked for, acknowledging the wickedness of her husband, and pleading that God should fight for David in his stead (1 Sam 25:23-31). David acknowledged Abigail’s wisdom and agreed it’s best for God to take vengeance, and soon after, God killed Nabal.

Ingratitude is evil. Don’t despise people’s help and goodness to you. Be a model that encourages good work and not one that quenches its fire. Being a believer means that you acknowledge the goodness of God and also the kindness of men, and one way you do that is by being kind yourself. Abundance cannot be experienced in an atmosphere of ingratitude and selfishness. Let goodness flow through you in all ways.

Confession: I have the heart of gratitude, which I express always, and I live selflessly.
