Why We Pray (2)

Luke 18:1 (AMP)

“Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart.”

In this age and time, it is quite obvious that many believers have inaccurate definitions of what prayer really is, and these affect their reasons for praying. Jesus modeled the lifestyle of prayer for His disciples, but His model of prayer was different from that of the religious leaders before Him, including John the Baptist.

Prayer was more of a communion and fellowship with the Father than a means of asking for things. The prayers of Jesus were not all about Himself but all about God, His Kingdom, and the expression of His will on earth. Our prayers would be wrong and not fulfill their purpose if they were offered only because we want things from God.

Many believers are good “askers of things” in the place of prayer, but they are not good at communing with the Father; thus, they do not really know His heart for them and the world they live in. Beyond the desire to ask for things, our prayers must be focused on the Lord, knowing His mind and will. When we pray with this in mind, we’ll understand that God indeed knows what we need before we ask Him, and as we prioritize His will above our needs, we become His sons and daughters truly.

Confession: I pray to commune and fellowship WITH God more than I ask for things.
