SERMON ON THE MOUNT (4)

“Blessed [inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect] are the gentle [the kind-hearted, the sweet-spirited, the self-controlled], for they will inherit the earth.” – Matthew 5:5 (AMP)

Every human on earth has different and varying temperaments and characters. Being saved doesn’t mean you do not have temperaments again, what just happens is that the temperament is now Spirit-controlled, not flesh-controlled. As Christ continued with words on the Mount, He addressed this nature of His which He instructs everyone who will follow Him to emulate and follow.

Before Christ, Moses was recorded to be the meekest on earth, meaning that out of all the humans on earth then, Moses was the gentlest and no could be as patient as him. But when Christ came, He lived a more patient, self-controlled, and Spirit-controlled life than anyone who has ever lived and this makes Him the only perfect example and instance of meekness that we have to follow.

Jesus used a play of words in this statement as they were said in Aramaic, being meek means being gentle and flexible. The Message Bible puts it clearly, “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.”

Have you ever sat down to take a mental note of things in this life that can’t be bought? If you haven’t, then you should, for this is what Christ meant when He said the meek shall inherit the earth. Peace of mind, stability and spiritual security, joy and much more is promised to those who are contented with who they are and what they have.

“But the meek [in the end] shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” – Psalm 37:11 (AMP)

It is possible to be a Christian and not be meek. Many people have assumed meekness or gentility to be stupidity or being gullible. One who is Spirit-controlled is humble and meek and this means that such person depends on the Spirit to respond to different matters of life. Christians must allow the Holy Spirit work on their hearts to produce this kind of life out of them. You must learn of the lowly and meek Christ in order to be like Him.

Let your disposition towards life be that you are humble before God and even men, not according to yourself more importance than you have. Inheriting the earth doesn’t amount to massive material prosperity but it means having the peace and imperishable rewards of a life submitted to God totally. Let your character dispel this.

Practical Application: Starting from today, take note of your response to people in different situations and examine carefully what your portrays about you – meekness or haughtiness.

Confession: My mind is renewed daily by the Word of God. My temperament is controlled by the Holy Spirit everyday. I am humble and meek. Pride has no place in my heart.
