“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” – Matthew 6:21 (AMP)
The term ‘Treasure’ means something or someone so valuable and precious to a man that he can’t just stop thinking about it, and he also makes every effort to safeguard it and be in ultimate possession of it, no matter what. In this passage, Jesus warns His disciples not to gather up or store treasures here on earth where it can be stolen or destroyed but store it up in heaven where it can’t be stolen or destroyed.
There are lots of assertions many have of this passage but in a definitive form, it means a whole lot to more than what it is popularly believed. Jesus was warning His disciples not to let their focus and attention be on this earth. There are many believers who care so much about what they have in this world than their eternal home and inheritance. You cannot care so much about money and material possessions at the expense of your eternity with God and expect to have treasures in heaven.
How do you have treasures in heaven? This would have been answered with just a statement, ‘by giving to the course of the Kingdom’, by many but is that the only way to have treasures in heaven? No. The kind of life you live here on earth in obedience, selflessness and being committed to the Kingdom of God in all ways makes treasures for you in heaven. Engaging in things that do not add any value whatsoever to your life in eternity is a waste. Whatever it is you have on earth at the expense of the Kingdom is subjected to destruction here on earth.
Apostle Paul wrote this to the believers in Colossians 3:1-2 – “If then you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.” This serves as an instruction that every believer must obey if their heart would indeed be with God.
A married man who truly loves his wife and children will always think about them when he is not at home with them, no matter how busy he is wherever he may be. No matter how busy you think you are on earth, don’t ever stop thinking about your eternal home. It is possible to say you are working for God and yet have lost touch of eternity with God, having no thoughts of it at all. Today, examine yourself and where your treasure truly is, and make amends where needed. It is when your thoughts and heart is fixed on the things above that you can walk daily to ensure that you do not miss heaven at the end. Set your heart on the Kingdom of God. Blessings.
Practical Application: Have you ever lost something precious and valuable to you? How did you feel? Can you now imagine how painful it will be to lose heaven and gain the world? What amends should you make?
Confession: I am a citizen of the Heavenly Kingdom and my home is there. My heart is fixed on my eternal home of rest. I do not encumber myself with the desires and affairs of this world so much to lose sight of heaven. My treasure is in heaven and that’s where my heart is.
