SERMON ON THE MOUNT (34)

“Don’t be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness give no honor to God. Don’t reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you’re only being cute and inviting sacrilege.” – Matthew 7:6 (MSB)

The fight for and pressure to be relevant is a matter of serious concern for the believer, especially the young ones of this age and this will make them do anything to secure this acceptance and relevancy in the society. Dogs and pigs are two kinds of animals that is associated with unholiness and dirtiness, and no one places his valuable belongings or treasures before these animals without expecting them to march them and destroy them.

In the society, there are people like this who do not know how to handle holy things or hold with high regard valuable things. These people are quick to seek acceptance and so they lower their honour for God, in a situation where they should have spoken highly of God and His Word, they go the way of the defilers who practice sacrilege.

One notable instance is when a Christian chooses to treat the word of God with disdain while in the presence of those in the world in order not to be tagged as being overly righteous or holy, wanting to be like the world and join them to dishonour God. The word of God is a valuable that should be treasured at all times and believers must not allow unbelievers think of God as a joker.

Comedians coming to the pulpit to make jokes of the mysteries of the Gospel is a trend in the Christian world of today and this has made it somewhat impossible for the Church to have many true disciples. You cannot joke with God and still come to preach that God to the same person you just joked with. It doesn’t work that way. Comedians have no place on our pulpits, no matter what anyone wants to say in support of it but unfortunately, it is what it is.

Dear Believer, in a world as this where honour for God and His Word has reduced drastically among many, you must ensure that you hold up this honour for God even in the face of rejection. You don’t have to go the popular way to be called a Christian. Being a Christian sometimes means that you have to take a step away from the common. Value God and His Word even in your daily conversations with people. Blessings.

Practical Application: Comedy is one subtle way many dishonour God today, even in the Church. Have you ever had to stop watching a comedy skit because of the dishonour to God you discovered? Or do you such yourself?

Confession: The Word of God is valuable and honourable, therefore, I do not disdain it nor do I hold it with disregard. I reverence the Word of God. I do not make fun of the truths of the Gospel.
