“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” – Psalms 23:3 (KJV)
Sometimes, walking with God means allowing Him to lead us somewhere we would not have chosen for ourselves.
We often pray for God to bless our plans, open doors and make our journey easier. But have we ever paused to ask whether the path we are taking is the one He wants us to walk?
In Psalm 23, David describes God as a shepherd. A shepherd does not simply provide food for the sheep; he leads them. He knows where they should go, where danger may lie and when they need rest.
David says, “He restoreth my soul.” Before speaking about the paths of righteousness, he reminds us of the God who restores us. Sometimes, we need more than direction. We need our hearts renewed because life, disappointment and our own choices can leave us weary.
Then David says, “He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness.” Notice that the verse says He leads me. Righteousness is not merely about appearing good before people. It is about learning to walk in a way that agrees with God’s heart, even when no one is watching.
And perhaps this is where the journey becomes difficult. God’s path may require an apology we do not want to make, a habit we must surrender, a truth we must accept or a decision that costs us something.
Sometimes, we want God’s presence without His correction. We want His promises without His instructions. Yet the Shepherd who restores our souls is also the One who guides our steps.
So, have you ever paused to ask whether you are following God, or simply hoping He will bless the path you have already chosen?
The beautiful thing is that God does not lead us in righteousness because we have never made mistakes. He leads us because we belong to Him and He knows the way we should go.
You may not get every step right. There may be moments when you have to stop, acknowledge where you went wrong and allow God to redirect you. But a wrong turn does not have to become your final destination.
The question is not whether you have ever wandered. The question is whether you are willing to follow when God calls you back.
The path of righteousness begins when we stop insisting on our own way and learn to trust the Shepherd’s direction.
Reflection:
Is there any area of my life where I am asking God to follow my plans instead of surrendering to His leading?
Key Point:
Righteousness is not simply knowing what is right; it is choosing to follow God’s leading, even when obedience is uncomfortable.
Confession:
- The Lord is my Shepherd, and I will follow His leading.
- My heart is open to His correction and direction.
- I will choose obedience over convenience.
- When I wander, I will allow God to redirect my steps.
- By His grace, I will walk in the path of righteousness.
Short Prayer:
Father, teach me to trust Your leading. Restore the places in my heart that have grown weary, and help me recognise when I am choosing my own way over Yours. Give me the courage to obey You, even when it is difficult. Lead me in the path of righteousness and let my life reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
