“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” – Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)
Some friendships are built around what people can offer, the benefits they receive, or the convenience of having someone around. But genuine friendship goes beyond personal interests. It is revealed in sincerity, commitment, and the willingness to remain present even when circumstances are no longer favourable.
The relationship between Ruth and Naomi gives us a beautiful picture of commitment beyond convenience. After losing their husbands, Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to return to their families. While Orpah eventually left, Ruth chose to remain with Naomi despite the uncertainty of what lay ahead. Her decision was not based on what she stood to gain but on genuine love and commitment. She chose to walk with Naomi even when the future was unclear.
This teaches us that genuine friendship is not measured only by the good times we share but also by the sincerity we demonstrate when things become difficult. A true friend does not remain only when there is something to gain. They show concern, offer encouragement, and remain sincere even when they cannot provide solutions.
We must also examine our own motives in friendship. Do we value people for who they are or merely for what they can do for us? God desires relationships built on genuine love, not selfish interests. We must learn to love people sincerely and not make our friendships dependent on convenience.
Reflection
Are my friendships built on genuine love and sincerity, or are they largely influenced by what I stand to gain? Can I remain a true friend when there is nothing to benefit from?
Key Point
Genuine friendship goes beyond convenience and personal gain. It is rooted in sincere love, commitment, and a willingness to stand by others through changing seasons.
Confession
I will love sincerely and without selfish motives.
I will not measure friendship by personal benefits.
I will be dependable in difficult seasons.
My relationships will reflect genuine love.
Prayer
Father, purify my heart and remove every selfish motive from my relationships. Teach me to love sincerely, remain dependable, and value people beyond what they can offer me. Help me become a genuine friend. Amen.
