BUILDING FRIENDSHIP THAT LASTS

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” – Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)

Building lasting friendships requires more than finding people we connect with. It requires intentionality, commitment, understanding, and a willingness to invest in one another. A friendship that will stand the test of time must be built on values that go beyond emotions, convenience, or temporary interests.

One important foundation of lasting friendship is trust. People need to feel safe being themselves without constantly worrying about betrayal, judgment, or having their vulnerabilities used against them. Trust is built through honesty, consistency, and keeping our words.

Another important foundation is communication. No friendship is without misunderstandings, differences, or occasional disagreements. What matters is how these situations are handled. We must learn to communicate honestly, listen with understanding, apologise when wrong, and avoid allowing pride to destroy meaningful relationships.

We must also learn to give one another room to grow. People change, experience different seasons, and sometimes make mistakes. Lasting friendship requires patience, encouragement, forgiveness, and respect for individual differences. It does not mean tolerating harmful behaviour, but it does mean understanding that nobody is perfect.

Above all, we must remember that friendship is a two-way responsibility. We cannot expect others to always check on us, support us, celebrate us, and make sacrifices while we contribute nothing in return. If we desire lasting friendships, we must be willing to invest love, time, sincerity, and effort into them.
