FIRE WITHOUT ORDER

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:40

On a narrow, dusty street in Los Angeles stood an unimpressive wooden building at 312 Azusa Street. Its walls were rough, its floors uneven, its windows often open to let out the heat of packed bodies and burning hearts. Inside the building were people, kneeling shoulder to shoulder, black and white, rich and poor – all of them waiting, praying and trembling.

There was no stage. No choir. No schedule and at the centre of it all was William J. Seymour, who was often found with his head buried inside a wooden crate, hiding his face while God moved among the people. Pride had no room there. God came swiftly. People repented openly. Lives were transformed. Missionaries were sent to the nations. Newspapers mocked the meetings, yet crowds kept coming. For a while, the fire burned purely.

But as months passed, something shifted.

The hunger remained, but patience was fading out. The silence of waiting on God was replaced by noise. Many claimed revelation; few accepted correction and the leadership became contested. There were some who outrightly rejected any form of order, calling it resistance to the Spirit, then the unity of the movement began to crack and Seymour was gradually pushed aside.

Amidst all of these, certain leaders left to start their own movements, leaving the building still filled, but the weight was already gone.

By 1909, the fire had weakened and by 1915, the building was sold.

The revival that shook the world could not sustain its own local altar that fuelled the global revival.

The believer must understand that Azusa Street did not die because the Holy Spirit stopped moving, it did because ORDER, UNITY, and DOCTRINE were not preserved.

Fire alone cannot guard revival because God surely moves freely, but He also builds carefully, so when structure is rejected in the name of freedom, confusion eventually replaces clarity and when accountability is resisted, fragmentation follows.

Territorial revival requires more than passion, it requires gradual and patient alignment. The same Spirit who falls in power also establishes order, leadership, and truth. Where these are neglected, even genuine moves of God weaken over time.

Fire must be stewarded.
Fire must be guarded.
Fire must be built upon foundations that can carry its weight.

Confession: I honour both the Spirit and the order He establishes. I walk in humility, unity, and truth. I receive structure as protection, not limitation. What God releases in my territory will endure across generations. Amen.
