“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” – John 15:7 (NKJV)
Prayer and the Word of God should never be separated. The Word gives us the foundation for our prayers, while prayer gives us the opportunity to respond to God’s Word. To pray with the Word means using Scripture as the basis, language, and direction of our prayers. Instead of praying only from our emotions or desires, we bring God’s promises, principles, and instructions before Him.
When we pray the Word, we are essentially saying:
“Lord, You have said it, and I choose to trust You concerning it.”
The Word gives us confidence in prayer. Knowing God’s Word helps us pray with confidence because we know His character and His promises.
1 John 5:14 (NKJV)
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
When our prayers are grounded in Scripture, we are not simply making wishes—we are seeking God’s will.
The more we know God’s Word, the more confidently we can approach Him.
The Word shows us what to pray for. Sometimes we don’t know what to pray.
Scripture gives us direction.
For example:
Need wisdom?
Pray James 1:5.
Feeling afraid?
Pray Psalm 56:3.
Experiencing anxiety?
Pray Philippians 4:6–7.
Need God’s guidance?
Pray Proverbs 3:5–6.
Praying for spiritual strength?
Pray Ephesians 3:16.
The Bible gives us a vocabulary for prayer.
The Word strengthens our faith. Romans 10:17 – “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Faith and prayer work together. When we know what God has said, we can approach Him with greater confidence.
For example, instead of merely saying: “Lord, I am afraid.” We can pray: “Father, Your Word says in Psalm 56:3, ‘Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.’ Help me to trust You instead of being controlled by fear.”
The Word transforms our prayer from fear-filled words into faith-filled prayer.
The Word helps us pray according to God’s will. One of the dangers in prayer is asking God to fulfill everything we personally desire without considering His will.
But Scripture teaches us to seek God’s will.
Matthew 6:10 (NKJV)
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.”
Praying the Word helps us align our desires with God’s purposes. Our prayer should not only be: “God, do what I want.” It should become: “Lord, let Your Word and Your will be fulfilled in my life.”
Jesus demonstrated the power of the Word. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He responded repeatedly with Scripture.
Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus knew the Word and used it in the face of temptation. This teaches us that God’s Word gives us truth to stand upon when circumstances challenge our faith.
How do we pray with the Word?
1. Read the Scripture
Choose a passage that speaks to your situation.
2. Understand what it says
Don’t simply repeat words without understanding their meaning.
3. Turn it into a personal prayer
For example:
Philippians 4:6–7
Instead of merely reading it, pray:
“Father, I bring my worries and concerns before You. Help me not to be anxious, but to trust You with everything. Fill my heart with Your peace and guard my mind in Christ Jesus.”
4. Believe God’s Word
Trust God even when circumstances have not changed yet.
5. Submit to God’s will
Remember that God’s Word is not a formula for forcing a particular outcome. We must trust God’s wisdom and timing.
Action Point: This week, intentionally spend time with God as you read and pray His Word. Let your heart stay on the promises of God and align your heart in the place of Prayers.
Confession: The Word of God is the anchor upon which my faith is built, therefore I am not weak in faith but strong and energized to stand until I receive God’s promise to me.
