SERMON ON THE MOUNT (26)

“Give us this day our daily bread.” – Matthew 6:11 (AMP)

King David was a man who trusted God for provision and all other essentials of life. In the 23rd Psalm, he writes, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” God is so filled with goodness that in Psalm 104:27, the Psalmist writes, “These wait all upon you, that you may give them their meat in due season.” God is interested in the welfare and wellbeing of His creatures, and much more of those who commit themselves to Him.

As Christ continues to teach the pattern for the disciples, He teaches them to ask for life essentials i.e. food, clothing and shelter, from God. These can be in the basic level or in a more advanced level but whatever the level it is, disciples must trust God for provision of all they will need for sustenance.

God brings provision in different ways. God can make available what you need directly or lead you to get it by making different opportunities available. This is why it is so important that what request you bring to God in prayers, you must be sensitive and attentive to His voice and leading. He answers prayers in different ways.

Let me share a short experience with you. Some time ago, I needed money and I had to pray. I had thought to call a friend of mine to help with some cash but I prayed first. A couple of hours after I prayed, the same friend called me and asked if I could help a friend of his who is a student do research on an assignment, and since it’s what I used to do, I agreed. And I told him to discuss the price for the work with the person without involving me. He did and sent me the advance payment that tripled what I had intended to ask from my friend.

And, on different occasions, the story had been different but if I had said no to the work, I wouldn’t have been able to have that money and I would have been hungry for the day or couple of days. As a disciple, don’t ever think you can’t ask God to provide money for you. In fact, He knows what you need before you ask but you must trust Him enough to ask Him without fear.

Daily, as a son looks to the hand of his father, so must a disciple look up to God, no matter the abundance of provision he already has. The default state of the disciple must be in dependence upon God. As you pray, ask for provision and opportunities that make it available unto you. Blessings.

Practical Application: Write out some needs you have intentionally asked God in the past 3 months. Can you truly say He provided them or you are still waiting for His provision?

Confession: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He meets my needs and I am well taken care of. I have all things that I need to live a comfortable life.
