“Blessed [forgiven, refreshed by God’s grace] are those who mourn [over their sins and repent], for they will be comforted [when the burden of sin is lifted].” – Matthew 5:4 (AMP)
In 2 Samuel 11, David committed a very grievous sin which really displeased God. He slept with the wife of one of his soldiers, and the woman also happens to be the granddaughter of his wise adviser, Ahithophel. David wasn’t supposed to fall into this sin but unfortunately, he did and it really cost him. To cap it all, he murdered Uriah, the woman’s husband, so that he might conceal his unholy act. What a costly mistake he made at the peak of his reign as the king of Israel.
In response, God sent Nathan to him and made him realise how grievous the sin he committed is and the consequences of the sin. Upon hearing God’s verdict, David humbled himself and repented of this evil. After the child from the intercourse was given birth to, the baby fell sick. David mourned and wept before God for His mercy over the baby but at the end, the baby died. David cheered himself after the death of the baby and returned to his life before God again.
He mourned sincerely over the sin and when the burden of sin is lifted, he became comforted. Everyone who mourns over his sin genuinely will always be comforted, but the problem is that, many people pretend to be sorry for their sins but they are not sincere with it.
To be a believer, one must mourn over their sins and repent genuinely. And after that, as a believer, inasmuch as we are still being made perfect, whenever we fall into sin, we must be genuinely sorry for our sins, and repent of them, in order that we might be restored to a state of peace with God.
Dear Believer, don’t ever get to the level where you won’t be remorseful for any sin you commit. Whenever you commit any sin, always be sorry for it and be repentant genuinely, for this is how to be forgiven and refreshed. Don’t allow yourself to be in a state of complacency whereby you do not care about what you do. God cares about what you do and thus, you must be cautious of what you do too. Do not live perpetually in sin with the façade that grace covers. Grace is not a license to sin. Be a repentant Christian.
Practical Application: Have you ever committed a sin that you didn’t truly repent of? Take some time to think on this, confess and genuinely repent for you to be forgiven.
Confession: I am a child of God. I walk in the light. I do not stumble and I do not walk in error. My heart is not hardened but it is soft and repentant.
