SERMON ON THE MOUNT (8)

“Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God.” – Matthew 5:9 (AMP)

The life and nature of Christ is that of peace which is beyond the chaotic lifestyle of the people of the world. Christ is called the Prince of Peace for a reason. While on earth, He had peace within Himself and also with those around Him. What does peace mean? Peace means being in a state of tranquility and quietness, and also means harmony in personal relations.

Did Christ agree with all the lifestyle of the Sanhedrin of His days? Absolutely not! But He still maintained peace with them. They were the ones quarrelling with Him and plotting His death but He didn’t have such thoughts towards them, and that didn’t mean He didn’t rebuke their evil acts.

Believers have been given the prototype of lifestyle to live by Christ and we must adhere to it if we will be truly Christ’s. There will always be quarrel and issues amongst humans on earth, either it involves us or not, but our duty is to see to it that there is peace. There are matters that will need our intervention before they can be sorted, and we must readily commit ourselves to sorting out those matters.

There are people who will always desire to pick fights with us, if we can’t avoid them, we must ensure that we maintain peace with them. Sometimes, maintaining peace can mean distancing ourselves from them, if possible.

Another important way to be a peacemaker is to be led by the Holy Spirit. Peacemakers will be called sons of God and so also are those who are led by the Spirit of God. You cannot make and maintain peace without being led by the Holy Spirit.

In every relationship we are engaged in, we must make sure that we do not allow offenses take root in our hearts so much that we fail to reconcile and forgive others when they offend us. Holy Spirit teaches and enables us to forgive even the deepest hurts and we live peacefully with those around us.

God wants you to be at peace with all men and you must obey this instruction because it is important to your lifestyle as a believer. Do not incite fights nor encourage quarrel or disunity but always focus on maintaining peace. Blessings.

Practical Application: Identify those around who tend to deliberately bring occasions for quarrel between you, pray for the wisdom to relate with them and to be able to live at peace with them.

Confession: I am led by the Spirit of God and I live at peace with all men. I maintain the calmness and quietness of the Spirit. The new life is at work in me and I do not incite anger and quarrel in others.
