Serving with Others

1 Corinthians 12:11-12 (AMP)

“All these things [the gifts, the achievements, the abilities, the empowering] are brought about by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, distributing to each one individually just as He chooses. For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts, though many, form [only] one body, so it is with Christ.”

No one who is not a part of the Body of Christ qualifies to be a minister of God, and no one can be a minister of God who is independent of other members of the Body. This means the ministry is not an independent endeavour. Ministry is an interdependent effort. God’s will for ministry is never for just an individual but a corporate body. No one can fulfill God’s entire plan alone. Just as the body has many parts, each person in ministry has a specific role to play.

Mistakenly and regrettably, many view this in light of competition, and anytime this is in existence, the work suffers, and the people of the world also suffer. When competition replaces cooperation, the body suffers. Unity is strength, and division weakens purpose. The purpose of the Church, as Christ’s, is to preach to the world and save them for the Lord. Competition betrays this purpose.

Jesus prayed that His followers would be one (John 17:21) because unity reflects God’s character. Walking in God’s will means learning to celebrate others’ gifts, submit where necessary, and serve in harmony. If you try to walk alone in ministry, you will never last. You will do more than you can handle, and you will crash at the end of it all. Recognise the gifts of men around you and use them wisely according to God’s leading. Work with them in love and unity.

Confession: I choose to cooperate with others even as I fulfil my stewardship in God’s Kingdom.
