Genesis 39:9 (AMP)
“He is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept anything from me except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?”
Joseph’s brothers got jealous and envious of their brother because of his dreams, which revealed that they would serve him, but because they were older than Joseph, they felt it should be Joseph who would serve them, and not the other way round. The enmity was much, and because they couldn’t hold it anymore, nor did they want to kill Joseph. They eventually resorted to selling him to the Ishmaelites, and he was brought down to Egypt, where he was bought by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.
The Lord was with Joseph, and he was prosperous in his master’s house, which made his make him the director of all servants in his house. For this singular action, Potiphar was blessed for Joseph’s sake.
Being a handsome and young man, his master’s wife desired to have him satisfy her lustful desires, and Joseph could have seized the opportunity that he was the overseer of his master’s house to do the bidding of his master’s wife, but NO; he did not, just because he saw such an act as sin and great wickedness against God (Genesis 39:9).
Of course, if he had slept with his master’s wife, it would have been made a secret; he would have continued with his daily activities in the house, and he definitely would have found favour in the sight of Potiphar’s wife, but how would God have reacted? Very sad, obviously, because he would have ‘successfully’ truncated the plan of God for his life and also the deliverance of the land of Egypt through him. Joseph did not jump at the opportunity that presented itself of taking advantage of his master’s wife; rather, he refused it because he could not just afford to disappoint God.
Truly, God has promised you a wonderful future, and He has beautiful plans for you, but He won’t bring you into fulfillment on the platter and trump of sin, the it-doesn’t-matter kind of sin that has destroyed the lives of many. As much as you have faith in God that He can use any means to fulfil His words in your life, know for sure that the way of unrighteousness is not one of the ways that the Lord uses to bless men; and if He would bless a man through that means, then such a man must have chosen to tread the path of righteousness, choosing to not spoil himself with the dainties of the king to be preserved to enjoy the fullness of God. A man who enjoys the dainties of the king cannot enjoy the fullness of God.
It is very important for you to exercise your faith in God by not seeing a sinful opportunity as a means of fulfilling God’s word in your life. God is holy, and so are His words, and if it be so, your fulfilment can only come from this holiness dimension of God. May the Lord grant you understanding.
Confession: Sin has no power over me. I live under grace and walk in righteousness. I am strengthened to resist every temptation today.
