THE GIFT OF GODLY FRIENDSHIP (1)

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9 (KJV)

Friendship is one of the beautiful gifts God has given us. It is a meaningful connection that allows people to share life, encourage one another, offer support, and grow together. Although we sometimes underestimate the importance of friendship, the Scriptures reveal that God values meaningful relationships and understands our need for companionship.

In Ecclesiastes 4:9–12, Solomon highlights the strength that comes from having someone beside us. He explains that two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour. When one falls, the other can help him up. When one becomes vulnerable, the presence of another can make a difference.

This passage reminds us that life was not designed to be lived in isolation. There are seasons when we need encouragement, correction, support, and the presence of someone who genuinely cares. God can use friendships as channels through which we experience these things.

We see a beautiful example of godly friendship in the relationship between David and Jonathan. Their friendship was not built on competition, personal gain, or convenience. Jonathan loved David sincerely, even when circumstances gave him reasons to see David as a rival. He demonstrated loyalty, sacrifice, and genuine concern for his friend.

However, godly friendship is not simply about having someone around us. It is about the kind of influence we permit in our lives and the kind of influence we become to others. A good friend should contribute positively to our lives, encourage us towards what is right, and help us become better. As Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, iron sharpens iron.

We must also understand that friendship comes with responsibility. It is not enough to desire loyal, honest, supportive, and godly friends; we must be willing to demonstrate these qualities ourselves. We must learn to celebrate others, speak the truth in love, respect boundaries, and remain sincere in our dealings.

Not every friendship will last forever, and not everyone should have the same level of access to our lives. Therefore, we need wisdom to recognise relationships that are beneficial to our spiritual and personal growth.

Godly friendship is a gift, but it is also a responsibility. We must learn to value it, nurture it, and become the kind of friends who make others better.

Reflection

Am I intentional about the friendships I keep? Do my relationships encourage my growth, strengthen my walk with God, and bring out the best in me? More importantly, am I becoming the kind of friend I desire to have?

Key Point

Godly friendship is a valuable gift that encourages growth, strengthens us through difficult seasons, and helps us become better. We must not only desire good friends but also learn to be good friends.

Confession

I receive wisdom to build and nurture godly friendships.

I will be a sincere, loyal, loving, and dependable friend.

My relationships will encourage growth and reflect godly values.

I will be intentional about the people I allow to influence my life.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of friendship. Give me wisdom to recognise and nurture relationships that are beneficial to my life and walk with You. Help me become a sincere and dependable friend. Teach me to love genuinely, celebrate others, correct in love, and maintain healthy boundaries. May my friendships bring glory to Your name. Amen.
