THE GREATNESS OF GOD (1)

“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.” – Psalm 145:3 (KJV)

Have you ever tried to describe God and realised that no words seem sufficient? We can speak of His power, His wisdom, His faithfulness, and His love, yet there is still so much more to Him than our words can express.

God is not great simply because of what He does for us. He is great because of who He is. His greatness existed before we knew Him, before we called upon Him, and before we experienced His mighty works.

In Psalm 145, David begins by declaring his intention to exalt God as King and bless His name forever. He understands that God’s greatness deserves more than occasional praise. It deserves a lifetime of worship.

Verse 3 declares that the Lord is great and greatly to be praised, and that His greatness is unsearchable. In other words, we can continue to discover more about God throughout our lives, yet we will never reach the end of who He is. Our understanding has limits, but God’s greatness does not.

Sometimes, we measure God’s greatness by the answers we receive to our prayers. When doors open, we testify of His power. When things work out as we hoped, we celebrate His goodness. But what happens when the answers delay? What happens when life does not unfold according to our expectations?

Does God become less great because we are going through a difficult season? Absolutely not.

Our circumstances may change, our feelings may fluctuate, and our understanding may fail, but God’s nature remains unchanged. He does not become powerful only when He performs a miracle, nor does He lose His greatness when we are waiting for one.

In verses 4–7, David speaks of one generation declaring God’s mighty acts to another. This reminds us that the greatness of God is worth remembering and proclaiming. We should not only tell people what God has done for us; we should also help them understand who He is.

Verses 8–9 reveal His gracious and compassionate nature. The God whose greatness is unsearchable is also merciful, patient, and good to all. His greatness does not make Him distant from His creation. Rather, His power and majesty exist alongside His compassion and faithfulness.

Then, in verses 11–13, David speaks of God’s kingdom and everlasting dominion. Human authority has limits. Kingdoms rise and fall, positions change, and earthly power eventually comes to an end. But God’s reign is not temporary. His kingdom endures through every generation.

Beloved, knowing that God is great should change the way we approach Him. We can bring our concerns before Him without pretending to have everything under control. We can worship Him in seasons of uncertainty and trust His wisdom when we do not understand His ways.

The more we recognise God’s greatness, the less we need to make our fears greater than our faith. This does not mean that our problems are imaginary or that we will never feel overwhelmed. It means that our problems are not greater than the God we serve.

Today, let your heart look beyond what God can give you and pay attention to who He is. Learn to worship Him not only for His mighty works but also for His unchanging nature.

Our God is great, and no season of our lives can diminish His greatness.

Reflection

Have I been measuring God’s greatness by what He does for me, or am I learning to trust and worship Him because of who He is?

Key Point

The greatness of God is not determined by our circumstances. He remains great, sovereign, and worthy of praise in every season of our lives.

Confession

The Lord my God is great and worthy of my praise.

My heart will continually declare His goodness and mighty works.

I will grow in the knowledge of God and proclaim His greatness to others.

Short Prayer

Father, open my eyes to understand Your greatness more deeply. Teach me to know You beyond the blessings I receive and to trust Your character in every season. When my circumstances overwhelm me, remind me of Your power, wisdom, and faithfulness. Let my life declare Your greatness, and may my worship remain sincere whether I am celebrating an answer or waiting in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
