THE GREATNESS OF GOD (3)

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” -Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)

One of the most beautiful things about knowing God is discovering that His faithfulness does not depend on how predictable our lives are. Seasons change, people change, and situations may turn out differently from what we expected, but God remains faithful.

In Lamentations 3, Jeremiah speaks from a place of deep pain. His words are not coming from a season of comfort and celebration. He is reflecting on affliction, sorrow, and the difficult experiences surrounding the destruction of Jerusalem. Yet, in the middle of his lament, he remembers something that gives him hope: the mercies of the Lord have not failed.

This is important because it shows us that recognising God’s faithfulness does not require us to deny our pain. Jeremiah does not pretend that everything is fine. He acknowledges the sorrow around him, but he also remembers that sorrow is not the whole story. Even in a season of distress, there is something true about God that he can hold on to.

Verse 22 tells us that it is because of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed. His compassion has not come to an end. Then verse 23 declares that His mercies are new every morning and proclaims, “Great is thy faithfulness.”

Notice that Jeremiah points us to God’s character. His faithfulness is great because He does not run out of compassion. His mercy is not exhausted by yesterday’s failures, and His ability to remain true to His nature is not weakened by the changing seasons of our lives.

Sometimes, we think of God’s faithfulness only in terms of answered prayers, open doors, financial provision, healing, or other visible blessings. These are wonderful reasons to give thanks. But God’s faithfulness is deeper than the things we can immediately see.

His faithfulness is also revealed in His consistency. He remains true to His Word. He does not become unjust because we are disappointed, nor does He cease to be God because we cannot understand His timing. We can return to Him in repentance, seek His wisdom in confusion, and depend on His promises as we continue to walk with Him.

However, trusting God’s faithfulness does not mean assuming that every personal desire is a promise He has made. It means learning to trust what He has actually revealed about Himself in Scripture. We may not know how every situation will end, but we can know that God is faithful to His character and that His Word is trustworthy.

The phrase “new every morning” also reminds us that God’s mercy meets us in the present. Yesterday may have carried disappointments, mistakes, or unanswered questions, but we are invited to meet today’s challenges with fresh dependence on Him. We do not have to carry yesterday’s guilt as though His mercy has run dry, nor do we have to face tomorrow as though we must depend entirely on our own strength.

Perhaps you are in a season where you are struggling to understand what God is doing. Maybe you have prayed for something for a long time, or you are facing a situation that has left you uncertain about the future. You do not have to pretend that waiting is easy. But while you wait, keep returning to what you know about God.

Remember His faithfulness in Scripture. Remember the ways He has sustained you. Keep praying, keep obeying His Word, and seek wise counsel when you need it. Faithfulness does not always mean receiving an immediate answer; sometimes, it means continuing to walk with God while the answer remains unknown.

Beloved, the greatness of God’s faithfulness is not that He gives us a life without difficult seasons. It is that His character remains trustworthy through every season. We may not have answers to every question today, but we can continue to know Him, trust His Word, and receive His mercy one day at a time.

The God who has been faithful through generations has not lost His faithfulness today. Great is His faithfulness, and His mercies are new every morning.

Reflection

When I face uncertainty or disappointment, do I remember God’s unchanging faithfulness, or do I allow my present circumstances to determine how I see Him?

Key Point

God’s faithfulness is rooted in His unchanging character. Even when our circumstances are difficult and our answers are delayed, we can continue to trust His Word and depend on His mercy.

Confession

Great is the faithfulness of my God.

His mercies are new every morning, and I receive His grace for today.

I will not allow difficult circumstances to erase the truth of God’s character.

I will trust His Word even when I cannot see the full picture.

By His grace, I will continue to walk with Him in faith and obedience.

Short Prayer

Father, thank You for Your unfailing mercy and great faithfulness. Help me remember who You are when I face uncertainty, disappointment, or delay. Teach me to trust Your Word rather than allow my circumstances to define my understanding of You. Give me grace to receive Your mercy each day and strength to keep walking with You, even when I do not have all the answers. Let my life continually testify to Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
