THE GREATNESS OF GOD (6)

“And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” – Daniel 4:35 (KJV)

One of the greatest truths we must come to understand about God is that He is sovereign. He is not struggling to maintain control, competing with another power, or waiting for human approval before He can accomplish His purposes. He reigns over all creation, and His authority is not limited by human strength, position, or understanding.

Sometimes, when life does not go according to our plans, we can begin to feel as though everything is falling apart. We make plans, set goals, pray about our future, and imagine how certain things should happen. Then, when events unfold differently, we may struggle to understand what God is doing.

But the sovereignty of God reminds us that our plans are not the ultimate authority over our lives. God remains God even when our expectations are disappointed. His throne is not shaken by the things that shake us, and His authority does not diminish because we cannot explain what is happening.

In Daniel 4, we read about King Nebuchadnezzar, a powerful ruler who had become proud because of his greatness and achievements. He looked at Babylon and took glory in what he believed his own power and ability had accomplished.

However, God humbled him. The king experienced a season in which he lost his royal honour and lived in a condition far removed from his former position. When his understanding returned, he lifted his eyes to heaven and acknowledged the sovereignty of the Most High God.

His testimony is significant because it came from a man who had occupied a position of great earthly authority. Nebuchadnezzar had power over a kingdom, but he was not the highest authority in existence. Above his throne was the throne of God.

This account teaches us that no human achievement makes us independent of God. Our intelligence, opportunities, influence, gifts, and accomplishments are not reasons to live in pride. Whatever we possess, we must remember that we are accountable to the One who reigns above all.

God’s sovereignty also reminds us that He is not limited by the authority of people. Human beings may hold positions of influence, make decisions that affect our lives, or stand in the way of opportunities we desire. Yet, no human being occupies God’s place. We should act wisely, honour legitimate authority, and fulfil our responsibilities, but we must never allow human power to become greater in our minds than the power and authority of God.

At the same time, we must understand sovereignty correctly. It does not mean that everything people do is good or that every painful event should be excused as God’s direct desire. People make real choices and are responsible for their actions. The world contains injustice, suffering, and consequences that God does not call us to ignore. His sovereignty means that evil does not make Him powerless and that human wrongdoing cannot overthrow His ultimate authority or prevent Him from accomplishing His purposes.

Think about Joseph. His brothers acted wickedly when they sold him into slavery, and Joseph endured years of difficulty before seeing the fulfilment of God’s purpose in his life. Yet, when he later spoke to his brothers, he recognised that God had worked through the events to preserve lives. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph acknowledged both the evil his brothers intended and God’s greater purpose.

This does not make what his brothers did right. Rather, it shows that human wrongdoing did not have the final word over Joseph’s story.

There may be seasons when you cannot understand why certain doors have closed, why a plan has changed, or why you have had to wait longer than you expected. You may not be able to see how the pieces of your life fit together. In such moments, remember that your inability to understand God’s ways does not mean He has lost His authority.

Trusting God’s sovereignty does not mean becoming passive or refusing to make decisions. We are still called to pray, plan wisely, work diligently, seek counsel, and obey God’s Word. Faith is not an excuse for irresponsibility. Instead, it gives us the humility to make our plans while recognising that our lives remain in God’s hands.

James 4:13–15 reminds us not to boast as though tomorrow belongs to us. We should make plans with humility, acknowledging that our lives depend on the will of God. This attitude helps us hold our plans with open hands rather than treating them as though they must unfold exactly as we imagined.

Beloved, the greatness of God’s sovereignty calls us away from pride, fear, and the desperate need to control every outcome. It teaches us to acknowledge Him in our decisions, remain faithful in our responsibilities, and trust Him when the future is unclear.

You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can continue to seek the One who holds all authority. You may not understand every turn in your journey, but you can choose to walk with Him in faith and obedience.

God is sovereign. His authority is supreme, His throne is unshaken, and no human power can take His place. Therefore, we can surrender our pride, commit our plans to Him, and trust Him even when life does not unfold as we expected.

Reflection

Am I truly surrendering my plans and expectations to God’s authority, or am I struggling to trust Him whenever life does not happen the way I want?

Key Point

God’s sovereignty means that He reigns with supreme authority over all creation. We honour Him by making wise decisions, accepting our responsibilities, and trusting His ultimate authority even when we cannot understand every circumstance.

Confession

My God reigns in supreme authority over all creation.

I will not allow fear or uncertainty to rule my heart.

I surrender my plans to God and seek His wisdom in my decisions.

I will remain faithful even when my journey takes an unexpected turn.

By His grace, I will walk humbly before Him and trust His sovereignty.

Short Prayer

Father, I thank You because You are sovereign and Your throne is forever established. Forgive me for the times I have struggled to trust You when things did not happen according to my expectations. Teach me to surrender my plans to You without becoming careless about my responsibilities. Give me wisdom to make right decisions, humility to receive correction, and faith to trust You when I cannot understand the way ahead. Help me remember that no human authority is greater than Yours and that I can depend on You in every season. May my life bring honour to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
