THE POWER OF GODLY RELATIONSHIPS

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” – Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)

Godly relationships are powerful because they influence our growth, character, decisions, and walk with God. The people we surround ourselves with can either strengthen our values or gradually weaken them. This is why we must be intentional about the relationships we build.

Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that meaningful relationships should bring growth and positive influence. A godly friend does not merely agree with everything we do but encourages us to become better, corrects us in love, and points us towards what is right. Such relationships create room for learning, accountability, encouragement, and spiritual development.

We see this in the relationship between Paul and Timothy. Paul became more than a spiritual leader to Timothy; he was a mentor, teacher, and father figure in the faith. He encouraged Timothy to remain steadfast, grow in the knowledge of God’s Word, and fulfil his ministry despite challenges. In 2 Timothy 1:5–6, Paul reminded Timothy of his sincere faith and encouraged him to stir up the gift of God within him. Their relationship shows us the importance of having people who recognize our potential, nurture our growth, and encourage us to fulfil God’s purpose.

Another beautiful example is the friendship between David and Jonathan. Despite the circumstances surrounding them and the fact that David was destined to become king, Jonathan did not allow jealousy or personal ambition to destroy their friendship. He demonstrated genuine love, loyalty, and selflessness. Their relationship reminds us that godly friendship is not built on competition but on sincere love and the willingness to see others flourish.

We must understand that godly relationships are not merely about what we receive but also about what we contribute. Sometimes, God places us in people’s lives to encourage, guide, strengthen, and help them discover the gifts He has placed within them. Therefore, we must become intentional about being positive influences and not just expect others to be one to us.
