Think On These Things (18)

1 Samuel 17:45

Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, Whom you have defied.

Of all characters in the Bible, young David was a man with so much to learn from. He was a man of wisdom, strength, skill and knowledge. David did not live in ignorance or better put that he walked in the strength of what he knew and that has become a part of him over time. A young shepherd boy of Bethlehem-Judah, last born of a family of eight, of good countenance and astounding skills, came to the battlefield to visit his brothers at the time Goliath was threatening the army of the Israelites. Being an inquisitive person that he was, he made enquiries about what the reward would be for anyone who silenced that giant that was defying the God of the army of the Israelites. Having got a satisfactory answer to his question, he got to work.

His brothers were angry at him for his inquisition and actions but he had no choice because he knew something that they also probably know but have not really become a part of their daily experience. When he confronted the giant, after the giant’s ranting, he spoke the words in 1 Samuel 17:45 as a response to him. Notice these words that stood out in his response – “… You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts…” Who goes out to fight a man as strong as Goliath with just the name of the Lord? That can only be a man who knows that, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the [consistently] righteous man [upright and in right standing with God] runs into it and is safe, high [above evil] and strong” (Proverbs 18:10).

What have you been feeding your mind with? David has had experiences that proved to him that the name of the Lord is a strong tower and so with this understanding, he approached Goliath in battle and he won. He became victorious not because of what he read in a book but because of what he has allowed to modify his belief system. He must have meditated so much on this truth and practiced it so much that he now became bold with it. Do you also believe that the name of the Lord is a strong tower? Think about it.

Confession: I believe what the Word says about me and I allow it to shape my life and destiny.
