Psalms 119:15 (NLT)
I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
Psalms 119 was written with a focus on the law, commandments, statutes and precepts of the Lord. In short, every line of this song has an ending upon the Word of God. The Word of God is essential if anyone will live life God’s way. The text for today points us to two important ways in which a man can bear profit from the Word of God – study and reflect. Apparently, these two words can be used the same way and interchangeably with meditate. Check this same Scripture in another translation – Ps.119.15 – “I MEDITATE on your precepts and consider your ways.” (NIV) The Word of God should be pondered upon if it will have a positive impact first in the heart, then that which is lived physically.
When last have you consciously STUDIED, MEDITATED and REFLECTED on God’s Word and His Ways? This is an act that is losing ground among many Christians today and then we begin to wonder why many Christians live like unbelievers. There is a thought process that the Word must be taken through for it to bring profit to the reader or hearer. When the Word of God is reflected upon, it facilitates the drawing out of meaning and applications from this Word by the Spirit of God. Meditating upon the word of God further establishes its roots in your heart. There is no way you can easily forget a word you consciously and daily think on.
It is possible to forget God’s Word and His ways, which is why it is necessary to meditate, and reflect upon it ceaselessly. When you engage your mind in this process, your mind becomes grounded in the Word of God so much that it depends on that Word for safety and survival. The ways of the Lord are wonderful and great, but you cannot know this if you have not taken time to consider and reflect on His ways. In your reflection, the Holy Spirit makes the Word of God and His Ways so real to you that you won’t doubt. What has been the composition of your reflection lately? Think it through.
Confession: Above all things to think about, I study, meditate and reflect on the Word of God.
