“Jesus replied, “Woman, believe Me, a time is coming [when God’s kingdom comes] when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You [Samaritans] do not know what you worship; we [Jews] do know what we worship, for salvation is from the Jews.” – John 4:21-22 (AMP)

The worship of a Supreme Being is a desire that many people desire and for this reason, many worship gods that they believe in their imagination to be the god whom they should serve and worship. A whole lot of nations don’t even know the god whom they assume to serve and worship. God, the Almighty, is the One who created the heavens and the earth, and many people especially in Africa, believe that the way to Him is through gods who previously came as humans but were mighty upon the earth.

During the conversation Jesus was having with the Samaritan woman, Jesus made her to know that the Samaritans worship what they know not but the Jews know what they are worshipping because salvation is from the Jews. In other words, both the Samaritans and Jews tend to worship God but the Jews worship from the place of knowledge and understanding of who God is but the Samaritans just worship without having any real knowledge of God.

Sadly, this is the experience of many believers today. Many who are believers today say they worship God but they don’t even know the God they claim to worship. In another way round, many worship the desires of their hearts and not God. They worship their wants and cravings but not God. Every act of worship they engage in is directed towards satisfying their desires and not primarily for the glory of God to be seen.

Dear Believer, as you engage in different acts of worship, seek to know God. The knowledge of God will help you worship Him aright and this sponsors the acceptability of your worship in His presence. When you do this, your worship becomes recognized by Him. Jesus came to show us the Father so that we can worship Him as we ought to. Do you truly know God?

Practical Application: What sponsors your worship of God – Compulsion or Knowledge?

Confession: The Holy Spirit is inside me and I have the knowledge of God. I do not walk in ignorance. By the Word, I receive the revelation of God and by His Spirit, I understand the workings of His grace and power upon the earth.
