“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your crops (income); then your barns will be abundantly filled And your vats will overflow with new wine.” – Proverbs 3:9-10 (AMP)
There is a popular saying that, “Givers never lack” and this is widely believed because everyone who gives genuinely as always experienced a measure of favour and reward attached to the giving. There is a principle of giving to receive that is widely taught in our churches today and many live by this principle even though it is not totally accurate because the reason many now give is to receive, not necessarily because they love God or are truly thankful for what He has given to them.
God has given His Word to bless the hand that gives with more. This is one of the motivation of the believer, but even as this shouldn’t be why you should give, let this truth stay with you, that God blesses those who give with all sincerity and truth. There is nothing you give that has no reward. However, the quality of what you give and the heart with which you give matters a lot in your giving.
Many people lose the reward for their giving because of how they did it. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:1-4 that the disciple must not do his good deeds so that men can praise but he should do it secretly and letting God be the one to praise and bless him. Anytime you take pride in what you have given, you have already lost the reward. And you must be willing to let go of every boasting you have that you have been generous towards any man or even God. Don’t waste your seed by exposing it to birds that devour.
Reflections: Have I been boastful of my generosity before men? Is my heart right as I give? Have I ever thought my giving is not rewarded by the Lord?
Confession: My heart is made right to give with love and humility. I am positioned to receive the blessings God has released for me.
