“Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” – Matthew 18:19-20 (KJV)

The prayer of agreement is a very powerful kind of prayer and it helps the church and individual believers a lot, in faith, in spiritual strength and serves as an encouragement to believers. It is important to understand the essentialities of the this kind of prayer.

Agreement is not simply saying the same words. It requires faith in God. Matthew 21:22 – “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” When believers come together, they should come with confidence in God’s ability. The question is not: “Is this situation too difficult?” The question is: “Is anything too difficult for God?”

Jeremiah 32:27 – “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Therefore, when we agree in prayer, we are not putting our confidence in ourselves. We are putting our confidence in God.

It is equally very important that the prayer of agreement must be according to God’s will. Matthew 18:19 should not be understood as meaning that God must grant anything whatsoever that two people agree to ask for. Our agreement must be submitted to God’s Word and God’s will.

1 John 5:14 – “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

Therefore, effective agreement is not: “God must do what we want.” It is: “Lord, we agree together and submit our request to Your will.” Jesus Himself demonstrated this attitude in the Garden of Gethsemane:

Luke 22:42 – “Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

The prayer of agreement is powered by unity. One of the greatest dangers to the effectiveness of corporate prayer is disunity. The early Church understood the importance of unity. Acts 2:1 – “They were all with one accord in one place.” And something significant happened—the Holy Spirit came upon them.

Psalm 133:1 – “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

Unity is powerful. Where there is bitterness, jealousy, unforgiveness, competition, and division, believers may struggle to pray together effectively. That is why Jesus emphasized reconciliation and forgiveness.

Mark 11:25 – “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him…”

Before we ask God to move in a situation, we must be willing to allow God to work in our hearts.

The prayer of agreement creates support. There are times when a person becomes tired in prayer. Consider Moses. In Exodus 17:8–13, Israel was fighting against Amalek. Moses stood on the mountain with the rod of God in his hand. Whenever Moses lifted his hands, Israel prevailed. But when his hands became tired, Aaron and Hur supported them.

This illustrates an important principle: Sometimes, your brothers and sisters in Christ need to hold you up in prayer. There may be days when you cannot pray as strongly as you normally do. Someone else can stand with you. And there will also be days when someone else needs you to stand with them. That is the beauty of the body of Christ.

What Can We Pray About in Agreement?

Believers can agree together concerning:

Families – Pray for salvation, peace, unity, wisdom, and God’s protection (Joshua 24:15).

The Church – Pray for spiritual growth, revival, unity, holiness, and God’s power (Acts 4:31).

Leaders and Government – Pray for wisdom and righteous leadership (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

Those Who Need Salvation – Pray that people will encounter Christ (Romans 10:1)

The Sick and the Weak – Pray for healing and strength (James 5:14–16)

Difficult Situations – Bring impossible situations before God (Jeremiah 32:27).

Action Point: When you pray together, pray in unity, pray in faith and pray according to God’s will and purpose.

Confession: I deal with every bitterness and disunity that I have with the brethren. I allow the Holy Spirit work through me in being in one accord with the brethren.
