THE FATHER’S BLESSING (2)

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing. – Genesis 49:28

There comes a time when a father’s words become more than just words. In Genesis 49, Jacob gathered his sons before his death and spoke over each of them. He remembered their lives, their character, their choices and their future, and then he blessed them. What caught my attention is that Jacob did not speak the same words to everyone. Each son received a word that was connected to who he was and what lay ahead. It makes me think about how powerful it is when someone who knows you deeply speaks life and direction into your future.

Sometimes, we desire a blessing because we want someone to tell us that we will be okay. We want to hear that our lives will amount to something, that our efforts are not wasted and that there is still something good ahead. But Jacob’s blessing reminds us that blessing is not simply about receiving beautiful words. It can also carry correction, responsibility and a reminder of the kind of person we are becoming. A true blessing should not only make us feel good; it should also make us think about the life we are called to live.

There is another thing that speaks to me deeply in this story: your present behaviour does not have to be the final definition of your future. Jacob’s sons had different histories, different weaknesses and different experiences, yet their father still spoke over their future. Sometimes people remember us only by our mistakes, but God sees beyond the chapter we are currently living. One bad decision does not have to become your entire identity. There is room for growth, restoration and becoming.

Maybe you have never received the kind of words you wished you could hear from your father. Maybe you have been waiting for someone to say, “I believe in you,” “You will go far,” or “I am proud of you.” It is okay to acknowledge that longing. But do not let the absence of a human blessing convince you that your life is without purpose. There is a Father in heaven who knows you completely and has not forgotten you. In Christ, we are blessed with every spiritual blessing, and our identity does not have to depend entirely on human approval.

So today, I want to ask myself, and perhaps you too: What words have I allowed to define me? The words spoken over you may have affected you, but they do not have to control your future. Learn to receive godly words, reject words that contradict what God says about you, and become the kind of person whose own words bring life to others. One day, the blessing we longed to receive may become the blessing we have the privilege of speaking over someone else.

KEY POINT

A father’s blessing can speak identity, direction and hope, but my ultimate identity comes from God. I will not allow the absence of human affirmation to make me forget that I am known and loved by my heavenly Father.

CONFESSION

I am not defined by the negative words spoken about me.
I am known, loved and accepted by God.
My past will not cancel God’s purpose for my life.
I will become a source of encouragement and blessing to others.

SHORT PRAYER

Father, thank You because You know me completely and You have not forgotten me. Heal every place where words have wounded my identity. Help me to believe what You say about me and make my words a source of life, courage and blessing to others. Amen.
