“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” – Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)
Loyalty is one of the qualities that gives friendship strength and stability. It is easy to remain friends when everything is going well, but genuine loyalty is often revealed during difficult seasons. A loyal friend does not abandon you when circumstances become uncomfortable or when there is nothing personal to gain.
The friendship between David and Jonathan is a beautiful example of this. Despite knowing that David would eventually become king, Jonathan did not allow his father’s hostility towards David or his own position as the heir to the throne to influence his love for him. He remained committed to their friendship and even risked his own safety to protect David. Their relationship teaches us that genuine friendship is not built on competition, jealousy, or personal advantage, but on sincere love and commitment.
However, loyalty does not mean supporting every decision a friend makes or remaining silent when they are going wrong. True loyalty also involves honesty, correction, and the courage to speak the truth in love. A loyal friend desires your well-being, not just your approval.
We must also understand that loyalty is mutual. We cannot constantly desire dependable friends while being unreliable ourselves. We must learn to keep our words, respect confidence, celebrate others, and remain sincere in our relationships.
