“For I am the LORD, I change not…” – Malachi 3:6a (KJV)
One of the most comforting truths about God is that He does not change. The world around us is constantly changing. People change their minds, circumstances shift without warning, and things we once depended on may no longer be available. Even our feelings can change from one day to another. Yet, in the midst of all this uncertainty, God remains the same.
Understanding this truth is important because the way we see God can sometimes be influenced by what we are experiencing. When our prayers are answered, it may be easy to speak of His goodness. When doors open and things fall into place, we may feel confident in His love. But when answers seem delayed, when disappointment comes, or when life takes an unexpected turn, we may begin to wonder whether God is still with us.
This is where the truth of God’s steadfastness becomes important. His nature is not determined by our circumstances. He does not become faithful only when things go well, nor does He cease to be good when we are passing through a difficult season. What we experience may change, but His character remains constant.
In Malachi 3, God speaks to His people during a period when their relationship with Him had been affected by disobedience and spiritual neglect. They had not been faithful to their covenant responsibilities, yet God declared, “For I am the LORD, I change not.”
This declaration reveals something beautiful about God’s character. Despite the people’s inconsistency, God had not become a different God. He remained faithful to His covenant purposes and consistent with His nature. His unchanging character was the reason they had not been completely consumed.
God’s steadfastness, however, does not mean that He overlooks sin or that our choices have no consequences. In the same passage, He calls His people to return to Him. His unchanging nature includes His holiness and righteousness, as well as His mercy. He does not abandon what is right simply because we desire a different response.
This teaches us that God’s steadfastness is not permission to live carelessly. Rather, it is an invitation to return to Him with confidence, knowing that He remains true to His Word. When we fail, we should not hide from Him or attempt to justify our actions. We should repent sincerely, receive His correction, and walk again in obedience.
Sometimes, we unconsciously treat God as though He were as unpredictable as human beings. When someone disappoints us repeatedly, we may become cautious about trusting them. When people withdraw their affection, change their promises, or fail to keep their word, it can become difficult to believe that anyone will remain dependable.
Although these experiences can affect how we relate to others, we must be careful not to allow them to define our understanding of God. He is not a human being whose character is unstable. His promises are not empty words, and His truth does not change with public opinion or the passing of time.
Numbers 23:19 reminds us that God is not a man who should lie or a human being who changes His mind like people do. This does not mean we can assume that every desire we have is a promise from Him. Rather, it means we can rely on what He has actually spoken and revealed in His Word.
God’s steadfastness also gives us a firm foundation when our emotions are unsettled. There may be days when you feel strong in faith and other days when you struggle to pray. There may be moments when you sense God’s nearness and moments when you feel spiritually dry. Your feelings are real, but they are not the final authority on God’s character.
You can acknowledge your struggles honestly without concluding that God has changed. You can seek Him when your faith feels weak, return to His Word when your thoughts are troubled, and ask for help when you do not know how to move forward. His unchanging nature gives you a reason to keep seeking Him.
Consider the words of Hebrews 13:8, which declare that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Christ who revealed the Father’s heart, welcomed the repentant, showed compassion to the hurting, and remained obedient to the Father has not become someone different. His character remains trustworthy.
Beloved, God’s steadfastness does not mean that every season of your life will remain the same. Some seasons will bring joy, others will require patience, and some will challenge what you thought you understood. But through every season, you can continue to seek the God whose character does not shift with your circumstances.
When you do not understand what He is doing, return to what you know about who He is. When you are disappointed, bring your questions to Him honestly. When you have fallen, repent and return. And when life is good, remain humble and faithful.
God remains the same. His holiness does not change, His truth does not expire, and His character does not become unreliable. You can build your life on who He is rather than on the uncertainty of what each day may bring.
Reflection
Have I been allowing my changing circumstances and feelings to determine how I see God, or am I learning to trust His unchanging character?
Key Point
God’s steadfastness is rooted in His unchanging nature. Although our circumstances and feelings may change, He remains true to His character and His Word. We can trust Him, return to Him when we fail, and continue walking with Him in faith and obedience.
Confession
My God remains the same through every season of my life.
I will not measure His character by my changing circumstances.
I trust His Word and depend on His unchanging nature.
When I stumble, I will return to Him in repentance and faith.
By His grace, I will remain faithful to the God who never changes.
Short Prayer
Father, thank You because You are the unchanging God. In a world where circumstances shift and people may disappoint me, help me to rest in the truth of Your character. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my feelings or difficulties to shape my understanding of You. Teach me to trust Your Word, receive Your correction, and remain faithful through every season. When my faith feels weak, draw me back to the truth of who You are. Let my life be built on Your steadfast nature rather than on circumstances that can change. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
