“There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.” – Joshua 21:45 (KJV)
One of the most beautiful things about God is that He does not speak carelessly. When He speaks, His Word is dependable. He is not a God who makes promises He cannot fulfil, nor is He one who forgets what He has spoken. His faithfulness is rooted in His unchanging nature, and this gives us a reason to trust Him even when we cannot yet see the fulfilment of His Word.
In Joshua 21, the children of Israel had come to a significant point in their journey. God had brought them into the land He promised to give their fathers. Their journey had not been without challenges. They had experienced years of waiting, wilderness seasons, battles, disappointments, and moments when the fulfilment of God’s promise may have seemed far away. Yet, at the end of this account, Scripture declares that not one good thing God had spoken to Israel had failed. Everything He had promised concerning that moment had come to pass.
Think about what this means. God’s faithfulness was not established in a day. Israel had to journey through different seasons before they witnessed the fulfilment of His promise. There were times when they had to move forward without knowing everything that lay ahead. They had to trust God’s instructions, face battles, and continue walking even when the journey was difficult.
This teaches us that the time between God’s Word and its fulfilment is not necessarily evidence that He has forgotten us. Sometimes, we become anxious when what we are trusting God for does not happen as quickly as we expect. We may begin to question whether He has heard our prayers or whether His promises are still reliable. But God’s faithfulness is not measured by how quickly our expectations are met.
However, we must understand this truth carefully. The faithfulness of God does not mean that every desire we have is a promise from Him. Neither does it mean that every personal expectation will happen exactly as we imagine. We must learn to distinguish between what God has clearly revealed in Scripture, what He has specifically promised, and what we are simply hoping will happen.
God is faithful to His Word, not to every assumption we make about His plans. This is why we must study Scripture, seek His wisdom, and allow His Word to shape our expectations rather than forcing our expectations upon His Word.
Consider Abraham. God promised to make him a great nation, yet Abraham and Sarah waited many years for the promised son. Their waiting did not mean that God had become unfaithful. In His appointed time, Isaac was born, just as God had spoken. Abraham’s story reminds us that the fulfilment of God’s Word does not depend on human strength alone. God is able to accomplish what He has purposed, according to His wisdom and timing.
Yet waiting can be difficult. It is one thing to read about God’s faithfulness in the Bible; it is another thing to hold on to that truth when you are personally waiting for direction, provision, restoration, or an answer to prayer. When the days become long and the evidence seems limited, faith can feel like a struggle.
In such moments, we must return to what God has already revealed about Himself. His Word remains true even when our feelings are unsettled. We may not understand why a particular answer is delayed, but we can continue to seek Him, obey His instructions, and trust His wisdom. Waiting on God does not mean sitting carelessly and doing nothing. It means remaining faithful in the responsibilities He has given us while looking to Him for direction.
There is also a responsibility that comes with trusting God’s Word. We cannot claim to believe Him while deliberately refusing to obey what He has already said. Faith is not merely agreeing that the Bible is true; it is allowing its truth to shape our choices, attitudes, and conduct.
When God gives instructions in His Word, our response should be obedience. When Scripture calls us to forgive, we must be willing to forgive. When it calls us to walk in righteousness, we must turn away from what dishonours Him. When it teaches us to love, serve, and remain faithful, we must depend on His grace to live accordingly.
God’s faithfulness should therefore produce faithfulness in us. We cannot control the timing of every outcome, but we can choose to walk in obedience while we wait. We can remain honest when dishonesty appears easier, continue serving when recognition is absent, and keep doing what is right even when we do not immediately see the reward.
Beloved, perhaps there is something you have been praying about for a long time. Perhaps you have become tired of waiting, or you have wondered whether God remembers what concerns you. Do not allow the length of your waiting to become the only lens through which you see Him. Return to His Word. Remember what He has already revealed about His character. Ask Him for wisdom to understand your situation, grace to remain obedient, and strength to continue trusting Him.
The God who fulfilled His Word to Israel remains faithful to His character today. His faithfulness does not give us permission to dictate how He must work, but it gives us confidence to seek Him and follow His leading. We can entrust our lives to Him without pretending to understand everything.
God does not need our understanding to remain faithful, and His Word does not become unreliable simply because its fulfilment takes longer than we expected. Our responsibility is to know His Word, trust His character, obey His instructions, and leave the outcome in His hands.
Reflection
Am I learning to trust what God has said and remain obedient while I wait, or do I allow delays and unmet expectations to weaken my confidence in His faithfulness?
Key Point
God is faithful to His Word. Although His timing and ways may differ from our expectations, His character remains trustworthy. We must learn to distinguish His promises from our assumptions, obey His instructions, and trust Him with the outcome.
Confession
My God is faithful, and His Word is trustworthy.
I will not allow delays to determine my understanding of His character.
I receive grace to study His Word, obey His instructions, and wait with patience.
I will not confuse my personal expectations with God’s promises.
By His grace, I will remain faithful to God and trust Him with every outcome.
Short Prayer
Father, thank You because You are faithful to Your Word. Forgive me for the times I have allowed delays, disappointments, and unanswered questions to weaken my trust in You. Help me to understand Your Word correctly and to distinguish Your promises from my personal expectations. Give me patience to wait, wisdom to recognise Your leading, and grace to remain obedient even when I do not understand what You are doing. Teach me to trust You sincerely and remain faithful in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
