Psalm 51 is one of the passages in the Scripture that succinctly highlights what it means to be sorry for sin, to confess it and to repent of it in the hope to be forgiven. Man is inherently evil and, even when he comes to the Lord, there are some times that he acts against the will of God and for this, he must be willing to confess and seek the Lord in repentance.
What is confession? Confession is the act of honestly acknowledging and admitting one’s sins and wrongdoings before God, with genuine repentance and a desire to receive forgiveness and restored back in fellowship with Him.
The prayer of confession goes far beyond what we do in church when praying general prayers or when we are asked to ask for mercy. One can ask for mercy and not be genuine in repentance.
As believers in Christ, His words and teachings, we are not expected to sin again when we become born again. But, we may fall into temptation along the way, we may fall into sin, but according to 1John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” So if we fall into sin, God expects us to confess them to Him and genuinely seek His forgiveness.
This is what the prayer of confession is all about. It is you approaching God, with a contrite spirit and a broken heart, seeking his forgiveness and repenting of them.
Something is important when doing this, and that is acknowledging that you have sinned, acknowledging your shortcomings and going back to Him as He is willing to forgive. Prayer of confession, comes from the heart and plays an important role in our walk with God.
