“And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.” – Genesis 27:34 (KJV)
There is something powerful about a father’s blessing. In the story of Isaac, Jacob and Esau, we see two sons who desired the blessing of their father, but only one received it at that moment. Esau’s cry after discovering what had happened was deep: “Bless me, even me also, O my father.” It reminds us that sometimes, behind our strength, confidence and silence, there is a deep desire to be affirmed, remembered and spoken well of.
Jacob obtained the blessing through deception, and Esau was left crying for what he believed should have been his. This part of the story makes us think about how easily desperation can push a person into wrong choices. The desire for a blessing is not wrong, but the way we pursue it matters. We must be careful not to manipulate people, compete with others or force what God has not yet given us.
There is also a lesson for fathers, parents and those who carry influence. Words spoken over a child can stay with them for years. A child may forget many things, but they may never forget hearing, “I am proud of you,” “You will do well,” or “I believe in you.” Esau’s cry shows the weight he placed on his father’s words. Blessing is not only about possessions; sometimes, it is the assurance that says, “You matter. You are seen. There is something good ahead of you.”
Yet, this story also reminds us that human failure does not cancel God’s ability to fulfil His purpose. Jacob’s deception was wrong, but God’s plan for Jacob was already bigger than that moment. Later, Isaac knowingly blessed Jacob and sent him away in Genesis 28:1–4. This teaches me not to build my identity around what someone else has received. What God has for me does not have to be stolen from another person.
Maybe you have also cried inwardly, “Father, bless me too.” Maybe you have watched others receive opportunities, recognition, love or favour while wondering when your own turn will come. Do not allow someone else’s blessing to make you despise your own journey. There is a blessing that comes from people, but there is also a blessing that comes from God, and what He gives cannot be measured by comparison. Wait on Him, walk with Him, and do not lose yourself while trying to obtain what you believe is yours.
KEY POINT
Don’t become so desperate for the blessing that you lose yourself trying to obtain it. What God has ordained for you does not need deception to become yours.
CONFESSION
I will not compare my journey with another person’s journey.
I will not force what God has not given me.
My identity is not determined by what others receive.
I trust God to bless me in His own time and in His own way.
SHORT PRAYER
Father, help me to trust You even when I feel overlooked. Keep my heart from jealousy, comparison and desperation. Teach me to walk in integrity and to believe that what You have prepared for me will come at the right time. Amen.
