“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” – Romans 12:2 (KJV)
Have you ever found yourself wondering why doing the right thing sometimes makes you feel different from everyone else? Why does choosing to please God sometimes mean saying no to things that others consider normal? And why can standing by your convictions feel so difficult when everyone around you seems comfortable with another way?
The truth is that the path of righteousness will not always lead us in the direction the world is going.
In Romans 12:1, Paul urges believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. This means that our relationship with God is not meant to remain at the level of words or feelings. It should influence how we live, the choices we make, the things we pursue, and the way we respond to the world around us.
In verse 2, Paul tells us not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. To conform means to take the shape of something around us. It is possible to become so accustomed to the attitudes, values, and practices around us that we begin to accept them without asking whether they agree with God’s Word.
Sometimes, the pressure to conform does not come through direct opposition to our faith. It may come through the desire to fit in, avoid being misunderstood, gain approval, or prevent people from calling us too serious about our walk with God.
But righteousness requires us to ask a deeper question: Does this choice please God, or am I making it simply because it is acceptable to the people around me?
God calls us to a renewed mind because our choices are often influenced by what we have allowed ourselves to believe. When our thinking is shaped by Scripture, we gradually learn to recognise what pleases God and what draws us away from His will. This transformation is a process. We keep learning, surrendering, and allowing the Holy Spirit to shape our character.
Standing apart does not mean becoming proud, judging everyone else, or refusing to relate with people who think differently from us. It means remaining loving and humble without compromising the truth we have received from God’s Word.
There may be times when obedience costs us acceptance. We may have to refuse an opportunity, leave a conversation, change a habit, or make a decision that others do not understand. Yet, our desire to be accepted by people must never become greater than our desire to please God.
Remember, the goal is not to prove that we are different. The goal is to become more like Christ.
The path of righteousness requires courage; not the courage to condemn others, but the courage to remain faithful when compromise seems easier. As we allow God to renew our minds, our choices begin to reflect His will, even when the world around us chooses differently.
Reflection:
In what area of my life am I tempted to follow the crowd rather than stand by what God’s Word teaches?
Key Point:
Walking in righteousness requires a renewed mind and the courage to honour God, even when doing so means choosing a different path from the people around us.
Confession:
– My mind is being renewed by the Word of God.
– I receive grace to recognise and choose what pleases my Father.
– I will not compromise my convictions merely to gain people’s approval.
– I will walk in love and humility while remaining faithful to God’s truth.
– By God’s grace, my life will reflect the character of Christ.
Short Prayer:
Father, renew my mind through Your Word and help me recognise what pleases You. Give me the courage to stand by Your truth when the pressure to conform becomes strong. Keep my heart humble, loving, and teachable. May my decisions reflect Your will, and may my life become more like Christ each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
