“I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” — Mark 9:24 (KJV)
There are moments when we genuinely believe God, yet something inside us still trembles. We pray, but doubt whispers. We read the Word, but fear speaks louder. We remember what God has done before, yet the present situation makes us wonder, “Will He do it for me too?”
Sometimes, we think strong faith means never having questions, never being afraid, and never struggling with doubt. But Scripture shows us something different.
A man came to Jesus because his son was suffering. He had already watched his child struggle and had probably exhausted every available option. When Jesus told him that all things were possible to the one who believes, the man cried out: “I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” What a powerful prayer.
He did not pretend that his faith was stronger than it was.
He did not hide his uncertainty from Jesus. He brought both his faith and his weakness to Christ. And Jesus responded.
The Centurion: Faith That Trusts God’s Word
In Matthew 8, we meet another man whose faith was tested by circumstances—the Roman centurion whose servant was seriously ill. When Jesus offered to come to his house, the centurion replied that he was not worthy for Jesus to come under his roof. He believed that Jesus did not need to be physically present. He said, in essence: “Just speak the word.”
The centurion understood authority. He knew that if an earthly commander could give an order and expect it to be carried out, Jesus had even greater authority over sickness, circumstances, and everything that seemed impossible. Jesus marvelled at his faith.
The centurion’s faith was not based on seeing the miracle first. He trusted the Word before he saw the result. That is what faith often looks like.
Faith does not mean that you understand everything.
Faith means that even when you do not understand, you choose to trust the One who does.
Reflection: What situation am I struggling to trust God with today?
Confession: Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. Strengthen my heart when I am weak. Help me to trust Your Word even when I cannot see the outcome. Teach me to believe You before I see the miracle.
