“You ask [God for something] and do not receive it, because you ask with wrong motives [out of selfishness or with an unrighteous agenda], so that [when you get what you want] you may spend it on your [hedonistic] desires.” – James 4:3 (AMP)
The statement that everyone prays is that which sounds unreasonable until you begin to see a lot of people who actually prays, spending time in churches and prayer grounds. There are many who even pray at home; morning devotions, night prayers, vigils, crusades and even apostolic invasions but unfortunately, there are little results compared to the amount of prayer labours.
Apostle James sheds light on one of the reasons why many people pray without results. Many people pray with the wrong motives and when they have what they pray for, they use it for their own selfish desires. God releases answers to prayers, not just because He is benevolent but also to establish His will and Kingdom on earth. God releases answers to prayers as part of the means through which His purpose is established.
If there is a question you need to ask yourself while praying, it is that why am I praying or why am I asking for this particular thing. If the reason is only your self to be satisfied and has nothing to do with God’s will being done and His Kingdom finding expression, then you are praying amiss. If truly you are a disciple of Christ, God won’t give you that which does not align with His purposes for you in any way.
You must always check your motives. Whatever thing you ask in the place of prayer will go through the heart check before it receives a response. Many people pray for prosperity and influence so that when they have these, they can oppress their enemies. God won’t answer this kind of prayer. You might even pray that God would do a miracle through you so that you can brag about it that you are the happening Minister in town, God won’t answer such prayers.
