“Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. Just make me a little bread from it first and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son. For this is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted nor shall the jar of oil be empty until the day that the Lord sends rain [again] on the face of the earth.’” – 1 Kings 17:13-14 (AMP)
Miracles are supernatural manifestations of God’s power that interfere in man’s daily experience and alter the unpleasant trajectory of things. This is true and a reality that someone like the poor widow in 1 Kings 17 can attest to. Remember that in the first verses of this chapter, Prophet Elijah declared that there would be no rain or dew for three and a half years and this ushered in a period of famine in the land which affected all and sundry.
After some time of trying to survive on what’s left, it was time to die because what is left is just for a single meal for her and her child. Then, here comes Prophet Elijah whom God have told that a widow had been prepared to attend to his needs since the Brook dried up. The widow was in a hopeless situation but Elijah did like he didn’t really care. But he actually cared and knew what His God is capable of. Did the miracle of provision happen because Elijah prophesied?
The widow was hospitable and this was key to the miracle. She was willing to at least give Elijah water to drink and when she was told to also make some food, even though she narrated her current situation to the prophet, yet she obeyed. One who is not naturally hospitable wouldn’t even go that for no matter what. The Scripture admonished that Christians must be hospitable. It is anti-Christian to not be hospitable.
Many people are experiencing delay in the fulfillment of certain prophecies because they are selfish and do not care so much about others. Being hospitable unlocks doors of miracles in a person’s life. Abraham entertained angels and experienced the miracle of the birth of Isaac. Don’t just be a Christian who prays without having the right attitude towards people. Care about people and be selfless. This poor widow was able to survive the famine season because God’s Word met selflessness.
Reflections: Am I truly selfless or I only care about you about myself and what profits me? Has there been any time that I have turned blind eye to the needs of others?
Confession: I am of God and I am selfless in nature. I am hospitable and care about the well being of others. For me, miracles are real and they are manifested in my life daily.
